TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida state lawmakers are planning to make several attempts to loosen the state’s gun laws.

Different bills filed in this upcoming legislative session could allow people to openly carry a gun, repeal the State’s Red Flag Law, and lower the minimum age to buy a rifle from 21 to 18.

The State’s Reg Flag Law was passed after the Parkland Mass Shooting in 2018. Now, going into 2025, some legislators are trying to get new laws passed.

The Red Flag Law allows authorities to take guns from people that are found to pose a significant danger to others or themselves. This law has received pushback from advocates for the Second Amendment and even some officials in Law Enforcement. Those in support of the Reg Flag Law said it has saved lives.

Another bill filed would make Florida an open carry state. Currently, people in Florida can carry concealed weapons, but are not allowed to openly carry firearms.

The other gun law attempting to be passed would repeal the current prohibition of people above 18 and below 21 of buying firearms.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act blocked gun sales to those under the age of 21. The 2018 law does not stop those under 18 from owning guns, but it does prevent the purchase of firearms for anyone under 21 who is not in Law Enforcement.

None of these bills are set in stone, but they will be discussed in the upcoming 2025 session.
