Police are investigating whether a “veterinary” gun, typically used to euthanize animals, was used in the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. The weapon resembles a large handgun designed for quiet operation, often used on farms and ranches.
Authorities suspect the firearm may be a modernized version of the WWII-era Welrod gun, with contemporary models called VP-9 or Station 6. Investigators traced the weapon’s origins to Connecticut, but the lead proved unsuccessful. Police are now examining sales records of similar weapons.
Retired NYPD Captain John Monaghan described the gun as “unique” during a CNN interview, emphasizing its reliability. Former NYPD Lieutenant Darrin Porcher noted the weapon appears to be a 9mm firearm.
Thompson, 50, was shot at 6:44 a.m. near the Hilton Midtown while heading to an investor event without a security detail. Surveillance footage shows the suspected gunman smiling at a hostel employee before the attack.
The investigation continues as detectives work to uncover the weapon’s source and motive behind the high-profile assassination.
