President Joe Biden on Sunday described the sudden collapse of Syria’s Assad regime as both a significant risk and an opportunity, emphasizing the United States’ commitment to stability in the region. Speaking from the White House, Biden unveiled plans to assist Syria’s transition while continuing efforts to prevent ISIS’s resurgence.
Biden announced that the US conducted over 75 airstrikes targeting ISIS positions in Syria. He stressed the need to secure detention facilities holding ISIS fighters and vowed to hold any groups supporting the terrorist organization accountable. “We will not let ISIS reestablish safe havens,” Biden stated.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Biden pledged US support for Syria’s neighbors and humanitarian efforts. He affirmed the US would back Syria’s transition toward an independent government while remaining vigilant of rebel groups like Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which has links to terrorism.
Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family have fled to Moscow following the rebel capture of Damascus. Biden criticized Assad’s legacy of brutality while promising continued US involvement in addressing Syria’s chemical weapons and supporting accountability for war crimes.
The administration also reiterated its commitment to securing the release of journalist Austin Tice, held in Syria since 2012. Biden expressed hope for his safe return and called for international cooperation.
